As a woman, I know that taking care of my body is important not only for my own health, but also for the health of my family. We are constantly inundated with demands on our time and energy. We are expected to be wives, mothers, employees, friends, and so much more. It's no wonder that our immune systems can become weakened and our emotions can become frayed. We are designed to be healthy! Despite all of the challenges that women face, God always has a solution. Here is 4 areas that I always check in with myself when stress, health or emotions seems out of control.
Prayer time, quiet time and being in the word are always my first recommendations to support mental health but there is also things we can do to support our physical bodies, our immune system and our emotions. They are LINKED!
Healthy fats are great for keeping your blood sugar balanced and satiated. When we are hangry, that is often a direct result of low blood sugar. My favorites are avocados and avocado or olive oil. A diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains will provide the nutrients that our bodies need to function properly.
Move your body. When are nervous systems are overworked from stress, or overwhelming life events we can stuck in a state of overwhelm and anxiety. Exercise helps to increase the circulation of lymph, which carries white blood cells and other immune cells throughout the body. It also moves the energy through our body, and allows the nervous back into a state of regulation. When we are feeling overly emotional those emotions can get stuck and cause us to stay in the state of an unhealthy emotion longer than necessary. Even a simple walk around the block can calm the nervous system, move stress through the body so we can think clearly again. Do not misunderstand me, emotions are not bad. Feeling our emotions is healthy and natural, we just don’t want to stay in that state.
A lack of B vitamins can also cause our bodies to feel out of sorts. B vitamins are water soluble vitamins that play an important role in many biochemical reactions in the body. These vitamins are necessary for the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. B vitamins are also important for cell growth and reproduction. There are many good food sources of vitamin B including leafy green vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds, and whole grains. Vitamin B12 is found in animal products such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and dairy products. If you don't eat these foods on a regular basis, you may want to consider taking a vitamin B12 supplement.
So often as women we only see taking care of our bodies as managing weight, but we are so much more than a number on the scale. He asks, “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (ESV)
