I feel like the media is over loaded with things to prevent sickness such as washing your hands, not sharing water bottles etc. While ALL of these are great advice I am often dumbfounded about the lack of advice about what people can do internally to boost their own immunity.

Gut Health. We know from previous research that has been done the gut is often referred to as the second brain of the body. The gut is made up of a unique ecology of bacteria that sends signals throughout the body. When this ecology is unhealthy the body is unhealthy. The foods we consume have a huge effect on the body. Consuming whole foods, that are minimally or not processed is the main key to a healthy gut.

I found myself in this situation years ago where my gut was in mass chaos due to a battle with lymes disease and a lot of really bad choices in my 20’s with food and alcohol. I found myself struggling with major food allergy issues, that came on almost over night. The biggest challenge was that I was just constantly sick. It seemed every little sniffle, cough, or cold was taking me down with it.

I started educating myself on gut health and started implementing bone broth into my daily routine. It has been life changing for my family.

Winter used to be such a struggle for our family. It seemed someone was always sick and by the time that particular sickness worked it’s way through the family, we were battling something new. By making our gut health a priority we rarely get sick anymore and even when we do we all seem to bounce back way quicker than we used too!

We started drinking bone broth regularly and it has made a world of difference. I always recommend homemade because it maintains all the healthy collagen that is SO vital to healing.

Collagen, when cooked brings forth gelatin. Gelatin is made up of amino acids which are the building blocks of healing. What does this mean? If your bone broth is not in gelatin form at room temperature then it is not actually providing all the life changing nutrients. (which is why it’s important to make it homemade) If it’s store bought, and at room temperature it’s liquid then you are actually missing out completely on the benefits.

In addition to improving gut health some other benefits of drinking bone broth include; helping you look younger, decrease cellulite, improve joint health and bone health, sleep better, think more clearly, heal leaky gut, and your digestive health with just FEEL better!!!

When the gut is healthy, the brain is happier. Certain microbes found in the gut can work to help heal and protect the brain in the long-term this is great for prevention!

It’s also a lot easier than you think. With a slow cooker there is really only 2 steps!

We love to make an entire turkey, save the carcass then use the bones for bone broth. We also eat rotisserie chickens on the regular, so we freeze the carcass and save it until we have many many bones to fill a crock pot. SO hippie! GO US!

EQUIPMENT
Slow cooker or instant pot, cheese cloth.

INGREDIENTS

purified water Enough to fill your slow cooker/instant pot
bones Enough to fill your slow cooker/instant pot
2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
2 tsp pink Himalyan Sea Salt
2 tsp freshly grated ginger
2 tsp ground sage
1 1/2 tsp ground thyme
1 tsp majoram
3/4 tsp rosemary
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp black pepper
1 tbsp tumeric
2 med onions finely chopped
1-2 large carrots chopped
INSTRUCTIONS

Add all ingredients to slow cooker. Turn on high for 10- 24 hours. When finished cooking remove any scum off top. Then strain broth through cheese cloth 2-3 times (or a fine mesh strainer) to get out any chunks.
For Instant Pot: Turn on high heat for 3-4 hours. Let slow release for one hour.
Put into mason jars and store in refrigerator for a few weeks or up to a year in freezer. Leave fat layer on top as it will help maintain nutrients.
NOTES
Drink 6 ounces daily for best results. You can also add to your favorite soups and recipes that have broth in the ingredients.
